Structure of NIFT Entrance Examination
The exam comprises of two papers which are written on the same day. One is called the Creative Ability Test (CAT) which is for 3 hours, while the other one is called the General Ability Test (GAT) which is meant to last for only 2 hours.
The CAT is to test your creativity and innovative use of color and illustration skills. It is majorly to test the design skill of aspirants. It is a paper-pencil based examination. You get awarded 1 mark for every correct answer and 0.25 mark is reduced from your mark for every wrong answer.
The GAT is a 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) which covers general English, analytical reasoning, comprehension, case study, quantitative, general knowledge and current affairs.

One good thing about this exam is that negative marking does not exist.
Preparation Steps
1. Practice
As with the old saying, & practice is the key to success. This is true for the fashion design entrance examination.
Having a study timetable is one great way to plan towards the success of this exam. You should study in an environment that is calm and comfortable for studying. More time must be given to subjects/areas you find difficult to understand.
Aside that, you must learn how to sketch any design you come across or that come across your mind before the day of the exam. This is very important for the Creative Ability Test (CAT).
2. Be Updated with Current Happenings
You should be updated with current news in your state/country and in the fashion design world.
You must know what is trending in the fashion and design world as questions will be asked from current happenings.
If you don’t want to miss any mark asked from this part, you will need to make good use of your free time. In your free time, browse through various magazines, newspapers and online forums so as to be updated with current happenings.
3. Time Management
Unfortunately, the time is not always enough if someone is to really settle down and answer all the questions. This is why you must learn how to manage your time effectively during the exam.
Do not waste too much time on questions you can’t answer in one trial. Quickly move to the next question and later come back to the unanswered one when you’re done with the ones you know.
When you are done with the easy ones and you still have time, you can go back to the difficult ones. But, it will be wise you leave the hard ones unanswered to avoid negative marking where it applies.
4. Study Past Questions
This is very important to pass the fashion design entrance exam. By studying past years questions, you will be acquainted with the pattern the questions are set and you will know how to tackle them without wasting much time in the examination hall.
5. Vocabulary Building
Questions are always asked from idioms, synonyms, spot the errors, fill in the blanks, antonyms etc. You must make sure you work on your vocabulary extensively.
6. Be Good in Simple Arithmetic
Simple mathematical knowledge in topics like number system, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, set theory, trigonometry, probability and others will help. You will certainly be asked questions in any of these topics.
